Biographical / Historical
John Little McClellan was born on a farm near Sheridan, Arkansas in 1896. He was active in local democratic politics and served in several public offices both at the state and federal level. During World War I, he enlisted in the army and served as first lieutenant in the aviation section of the Signal Corps. He was city attorney for Malvern, Arkansas from 1920 to 1926, after which he was elected prosecuting attorney for Hot Springs County. McClellan sought and won election to the United States House of Representatives in 1934 and re-election in 1936. In 1942, he enterered and won the United States Senate race and served as the Arkansas Senator for 35 years until his death in 1977.
